A legion of dancers, elegantly choreographed by Alleluia Panis, soar through the air, creating a potent mashup of battle and ballet. Ethereal and deadly, the dancers take flight even when the narrative bogs down in Jeannie Barroga’s dense historical-political drama at San Jose Stage. The playwright has a noble aim — to reveal the untold story of the Buffalo Soldiers, African-American men dispatched to fight in the Philippines, who often found themselves at cross purposes with history. Barroga attempts to deconstruct a thorny tangle of issues, including race, colonialism and greed, in her ambitious epic. But the unwieldy narrative overreaches its grasp, and her passionate, compelling point of view on the plight of these soldiers and the people they were sent to subdue doesn’t yet come through clearly enough in this world-premiere production.
The story finds high ballet shoes temporary fake tattoo sticker (set of 2) school sweethearts Cody (a black man powerfully performed by Aldo Billingslea) and Belinda (a white woman sensitively portrayed by Carrie Paff) who married right out of high school and now have two children, Returning to town is Man (a white man beautifully performed by Gabriel Marin), who went to high school with the couple and has long had a crush on Woman, The tension in Cody and Belinda’s marriage is palpable, and when Man rents the couple’s apartment over their garage, an affair seems eminent..
Stretch limousines — some colored pink — are lined in neon and strobe lights, costing up to $850 for four hours. Hotels, wineries or churches must be booked, with planning that often starts at least a year in advance. Celebrations may last eight or 10 hours, with 200 guests. The celebrations reflect changing cultural and academic aspirations of Latinos in the United States. “She’s a good student, with good grades, and plays softball,” said one mother. “We’ll make it happen somehow.”.
